Black & Decker PHV1810 Review by Renee Ligman (EAST GRAND FORKS, MN, US)

wonderful little vacuum for the camper and small home, just wish the battery would last longer but not upset over the quality one bit!!

Black & Decker PHV1810 Review by Kathleen Wilber

We've had our Black & Decker Pivot Vac (PHV1810) for over a year now. We bought it at Sears and our main purpose for it was to clean up after small messes. I was actually hoping I could use it to clean dog hair off the furniture, but it's really not very good at that. Unless the hair is like tumbleweed and able to move freely, the vac doesn't have enough power to grab it. The flip up brush attachment can help somewhat with this, but then the problem you run into is battery power. After using this to clean dog hair off of my futon the power starts to run out. Now this is on a futon too, so I'm not vacuuming arms or parts of the frame since that is wooden and not upholstered.
The pivot function is nice. I feel like it had a smoother pivot when we first bought it. It's kind of rigid when it pivots now. The rigidity applies to the button you push to allow it to move as well. I do not have arthritis, but I imagine it would not be comfortable to move if you did.
Before buying this I had read that after turning off the vac, debris will fall out of the nozzle. This is completely true. I have to hold the vac upside down when pivoting the nozzle for storage, otherwise dirt will fall out on the floor. It must just not get sucked up completely into the canister.
Overall, I'm pleased with bringing it out grab dust bunnies and small piles of dust since it is easier than wheeling out my upright vac. But, this is really only a small convenience. Many times I still find myself bringing out my upright for jobs I wish that this would accomplish. I do not think I would buy this again. It's not useful or convenient enough to validate spending the money. It hasn't upset me enough to return it, but it hasn't impressed me enough to recommend it to others. A very milk-toasty, meh, vacuum.

Best uses:
-Sucking up dust bunnies
-sucking up piles of dirt that was just swept
-Anything that is loose

Worst:
-Sucking hair off of furniture
-Dust (not good for dusting bookshelves/removing that annoying layer of dust. It will not pick this up.)

Black & Decker PHV1810 Review by D. Mckinzie (Atoka, OK)

The last hand vac I bought was a Dustbuster 7.2V and it was pitiful. No power and you were recharging every 5 minutes. Before I bought this one, I checked around to see which one had good reviews, enough power to actually be useful, and didn't have to constantly be recharged. I had pretty much brought it down to a choice between this one and another one (also a Black and Decker) but I chose this one because the nozzle where you suction up dust/debris pivots, so that you can make it the shape that is most convenient for whatever you're using it on. I had several areas where I needed the nozzle to go a different direction in order for the unit to fit in the space, so it was convenient that this one will work in several ways. It has plenty of power for a cordless hand vac, too. I have a little hand vac that plugs in and it will outdo this one, but it's a major bother just getting it out, plugging it in and then you're dragging the cord around everywhere and replugging it. This one will go in the small spots and also go out to the car for a quick cleanup there. And I haven't had to recharge the battery yet. With the dustbuster I had before, I would have recharged four or five times by now. The canister is easy to open, although I'm not really very fond of the way you have to empty it sideways, but it's not that big a deal; I can live with it. I accidentally dropped a container of birdseed in my kitchen this afternoon and this little vac grabbed it all up (with a fast sweep of my broom to get it all close together) in a matter of seconds. I figure it almost earned it's entire cost right there.
